To celebrate the theme of beauty this month, there will be a free showing of the epic film, Dersu Uzala, by the Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa, who was a huge influence on both George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg. Lucas credit Kurosawa for influencing his Star Wars films. The great American film director Martin Scorsese refers to Kurosawa as “my master.” Dersu Uzala is epic in form yet intimate in scope. Set in the forests of Eastern Siberia at the turn of the century, it is a portrait of the friendship that grows between an aging hunter and a Russian surveyor. A romantic hymn to nature and the human spirit.” The film is unforgettable and one of the most original, beautiful films you will ever see.
