What Do You Mean Let’s ACT?
ACT
is an acronym that embodies our Theme for the 2006-2007 church year (and maybe
beyond!). The letters stand for three
interrelated verbs which encapsulate a simple plan for a healthy SWUU
congregation. The words, as illustrated
by the logo on the right are: Act, Connect, and Thrive.
Every year, the committee chairs, and the Board convene at a retreat to
plan for the coming year, review the previous year, discuss ongoing issues of
the church (always a VERY short discussion), and eat really good food. Part of that process for the past several
years has been the forming of a Theme.
The Theme is a consensus statement around which the years activities
center. It is formed with a spirit of
congregational representation on the part of the retreat attendees.
So, why these three words, this year?
Because they are foundational actions for the success of our religious
community on both an individual and a congregational level. Act:
UU’s are as known for doing as they are for thinking. Join a committee. Take a stand.
Sing. Get involved! Connect: It’s a basic human need. We’ve already acknowledged that we’re part of
an interdependent web. It’s time to
start exploring some of those strands.
Besides, our action are more effective and have more meaning when we do
them together. Thrive: It’s
what happens to you when you act and connect. You grow. You change. You flourish. You expand. If that isn’t a healthy place for a person or congregation
to be, what is? So, come on. Lets’ ACT!
