Do you ever feel you’d like to get to know people at church better? This fall you’ll have an
opportunity to do just that by participating in something called a Covenant Group here at SouthWest UU Church. Covenant groups are small groups that meet once a month for 8- 9 months with a facilitator. They will follow a particular format–there is a topic for the meeting about which you will receive some advance material to help you start thinking about your personal experiences related to the topic. When the group meets, the goal is for each person to share in a personal way about the topic while the rest of the group listens. This is different from a class or discussion group as the purpose is to get to know one another rather than to take in information or reach a conclusion. Those of us who have participated in
these groups have found them to be a place where we felt deeply heard and had the opportunity to connect with others in a way that is special. Each meeting will last between 1 1/2 and 2 hours. The “covenant” part is our agreement to participate, listen, not interrupt or give advice, treat one another with deep respect, and do our best to be present for the whole series of meetings. There will be an opportunity to take part in a “sample” covenant group after church on Sunday, September 13. Sign-up will start then and be open through the end of September, with groups meeting for the first time in October. There will be several meeting times available. Those of us on the planning team are excited about offering this here at SWUU. It’s a great chance for anyone new to the church to get to know people and for people
not-so-new to the church to get to know people in a different way.
