SOUTHWEST
SUPPORTS THE RIGHT OF
SAME-SEX MARRIAGE OR CIVIL UNIONS
The Church’s By-Laws provide a procedure
for taking stands on social justice issues.
Such stands require a written vote of at least 67 percent of the
membership for passage. At a special
meeting on October 24, 2004, the congregation adopted the following resolution:
WHEREAS Unitarian Universalist
Congregations covenant to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of
every person and justice, equity, and compassion in human relations; and
WHEREAS Southwest Unitarian Universalist Church is a Welcoming Congregation and
includes lesbian and gay persons in all aspects of church life; and WHEREAS the
Unitarian Universalist Association is on record as supporting same-sex unions;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that Southwest Unitarian Universalist Church supports
the right of lesbian and gay persons to enter into legally valid and legally
recognized same-sex marriages or to form same-sex civil unions with all the
rights, privileges, and responsibilities of marriage. Further, the Church
opposes any legislation that restricts this right, and will publicize this
position.
